The Challenger Safety Joint is designed for the safe and dependable release from the drill string should the drill sting become stuck below the Safety Joint.

Available in a variety of sizes and connections. Each Safety Joint is designed with a self-aligning seal face to stop radial movement in the connection providing a consistent break out torque.

Operation

The Challenger Safety Joint engagement threads were designed to ensure that the two housings do not back off during operation, but allow for the housings to be separated quickly in the event the drill string becomes stuck.

Disengaging the Safety Joint

1. Pick up on the drill string until the string weight is between 500 to 1,000 lbs. It is recommended that the weight limits are not exceeded. Exceeding the weight limits could potentially damage the housing’s self-aligning seal face.
2. Rotate the string to the left until the back off or break amount is exceeded.
3. Pick up on the string slowly while rotating to the left to unscrew the Safety Joint. Care should be taken to keep a little weight on the Safety Joint as the tool is unscrewed, as recommended in Step 1. The engagement threads will lift the drill string approximately 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ (depending on the size of the Safety Joint) for each revolution of the string. A decrease in string weight should be observed as the Safety Joint separates. Rotating the upper housing five complete revolutions will release the Safety Joint.
